Los Angeles

It's been nearly 2 months since my awesome US trip. I still haven't got around to clearing out some of the junk i collected as souveniers in the States. Honestly I still have receipts for lunch at Disneyland! I have the inside of the fortune cookie (which said " Pleasure awaits your company" lol, and pleasure did certainly await my company :P)

LAX Airport, 5.07.2010

We went to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. That's the itinerary that was set out, it was always going to be a short trip. It had to be short as I had spent 6 weeks in Dec/Jan travelling around South East Asia (which basically funnelled most of my savings as a working student..but well worth it..i'll get to that story sometime in the future..). So the US trip was basically planned as 10 days. We set out on business class seats on Qantas (amazing!) the hosties actually greet you with your names..lol, plus out seats were the fully reclinable type, we had the flat beds (heaven :)) although I didn't really utilise the beds, come on the flight was at 10am and Im not a day sleeper! Anyway 16 hours later we land at LAX, it's much colder than I expected, good thing I have a knack of wearing scarves. We find a shuttle to get to our hotel, the Hilton at Anaheim (ohhh yehh..it was all good hotels at great locations on this trip...). We only paid US$350, which means i only paid half of that for 3 nights. Since it's the same morning in Anaheim, we set out to Disneyland immediately, we're little troopers seriously...there was no jet lag, nothing, we were just so excited to get out there, but this was my second time to a Disneyland (I've been to the one in Hong Kong in 2005 with the family). So I was subconsciously comparing the two experiences, I have to say I've grown up since my time 5 years ago, and felt everything was just abit too childish for me. Maybe I'll go to the one in Paris or Florida when I have kids and it'll be a more fulfilling experience.

Disneyland, Anaheim 5.07.2010 -
Fireworks with my dodgy camera

We waited so long in the lines, i think it was school holidays or something, we even contemplated whether or not to go back to the hotel, just to rest our feet, cos ONE of us wasn't used to walking! haha...anyway I remember the fireworks at the Hong Kong Disneyland and that was a real highlight to look forward to at this Disneyland, and they did not disappoint! They had this heart shaped fireworks, they only set it off once, must be expensive or something, I missed taking a photo the first time and was waiting for my chance if it appeared again, but it never did. Oh well.

Day 2 was dedicated to Disneylands California Adventure Park, which is just the other side of Disneyland. I liked CAP better than Disneyland, it's more the adult version, plus they had a mad roller coller, California Scream. I was literally shivering in my boots when we were waiting in the queue. I had to be pacified by my friend, and then we got on, straped up, I shut my eyes, and did not open them til we slowed down. (I'm a big baby, I know...:P).

Paradise Pier, California Adventure Park. 6.7.10
Then we got ourselves a fast pass and went on it about 4 more times, by the second and third time, not only had I opened my eyes, I was posing for the cameras..lol...I think I'm officially over my fear of roller coasters. Oh, the other ride that had me shaking was the California Boomer, it's like DreamWorlds Giant Drop but reversed, if that makes sense. It more propels you upwards, and then brings you down. Now that was scary, and what's scary was that I was watching some of the girls get off, and they seemed to be close to tears, which had me so sooo worried, that besides whinging to my friend, some of the girls who were waiting in line with us thought it was wise to help me calm down. Man, I look like the biggest wimp right now! But at least I did it all!
Hollywood Tower of Terror
The other extreme ride was the Hollywoods Tower of Terror, god this was bad! Becausewe could hear the screams of people inside this building, and it was just that sinking feeling setting inside me again, not even the fact that I had overcome the fear of roller coasters could help me then.
So we line up for the Tower of Terror, they put us into a dark room with a tv with some movie playing, which we were meant to watch. But I was so terrified that the floor of this "room" would drop any second (just cos we were adamantly told to step away from the walls of the room, and to stay within this designated area, and it did not help that my friend thought it was funny to feed my fear. I was clutching to my friend half the time. But it was for nothing, the room did not  drop or anything, after the movie finished, we were taken to the 'real' ride. We ended up getting front seats on this ride, and man was it terrifying. It's pretty dark and we didn't really realise how high we really were. I think it was the 13th floor or something, and they would drop us down so hard and fast. I was just glad to get out of that without heart palpitations...

Aladdin <3 Genie!
California Adventure Park also had the Aladdin show. That was really funny. Highly recommend it, we timed it so perfectly (not on purpose lol) that we hardly had to line up, we made it to the mezzanine level, which we preferred actually. But it's a good laugh.

The longest line was for the Toy Story ride, I think we waited close to an hour for this, and i ended up losing! Sigh! I got 74,600, and my accuracy is abysmal.

Oh and similar to the Fireworks at Disneyland, CAP also has 'World of Colour' featured at night. I enjoyed this too, but my friend didn't I think. It's pretty, but it's not exactly wow amazing. I reckon Singapores Sentosa Islands 'Songs under the Sea' had a bigger wow factor for me..but having said that I enjoyed World of Colour, and we were basically in the wet zone, so I was trying really hard to protect my camera half the time. But how amazing is that picture..considering that I took it with my camera that doesn't function well after the sun goes down!
World of Colour

Day 3 was dedicated to Universal Studios. We had prebooked the Greyline Tour + Front of Line passes for US$143. Which basically meant they transported us from our hotels to Universal Studios. The Front of Line passes didn't really come in handy til maybe late afternoon when there were many more people lining up. The best rides were the Simpsons Ride - just purely because of the special features, and perhaps the Universal Studios tour itself which had the pretty cool King Kong ride. Other than that there wasnt an aweful lot to do here. Citywalk was just outside, and we ended up watching the "Blackstreet Boys" for awhile, they were quite entertaining actually.

That night we were both craving icecream at about 10pm, so a late night stroll led us to Cold Storage which had the most amazing mix and match icecreams. They have a cake batter flavour! mmmm nom nom nom
